首先，當時我在跟我的學生在聊中美關係
So I was discussing China-Us relation with my student
我們聊到勢力
we were talking about (political) power
到底要用什麼動詞來形容勢力
which verb should we interact with power when it comes to ->
尤其是有這樣子的一個動作
especially the motion like ->->->->
當時，他用了「擴散」這個詞
At that time, she used 「擴散」to interact with the word ‘power’
我跟他說，勢力是不能用「擴散」這個詞的
I told her, this usage is not precise enough
讓我們一起來看看，到底要用什麼詞比較好
Let’s take a look, which verb should we use

1.擴大
擴大這個詞其實你可以用在非常多的方面
this word can be used in many aspects (compared to other 3 words)
那「擴大」這個詞基本上是「以小到大」的這個方向
「擴大」indicates the change “from small to big”
比如說：1.「擴大」市場
eg. 「擴大」market
擴大「市場」我們在這邊講的是擴大市場的市佔率
Precisely speaking, here refers to 「擴大」the market share
「市占率」這個數字會是「從小到大」
The ‘market share’ can be observed/ estimated as number grows
所以當我們說擴大「市場」時，大部分都是在說擴大市場的「市佔率」
so when we said 「擴大」the market, mostly we are refering to 「擴大」the market share.
那另外，你也可以說
You can also say
2.擴大領土
eg. 擴大territory
你的領土原本是這麼小，後來變那麼大，就是 2.擴大領土
Your territory was so small, then becomes that big. eg. 擴大territory
3.擴大勢力
eg. 擴大power
我想這個（詞）對於（主修）國際關係的同學非常有用
I think this word(擴大）is pretty useful for students majoring in International relations
3.擴大勢力: 就是原本勢力那麼小變那麼大
refers to the growing power

Let’s take a look at this word 「擴張」
「擴張」這個詞你要注意的是，這個詞有「野心」的成分在
Be attentive while using this word because this word has the underlying meaning of having the ambition
比如說，1.擴張市場
e.g.「擴張」 market
你用了這個詞，代表這個人、這個公司是有野心的
By using this word, you are refering to the action of the person/company contains ambition
我們不管他的出發點是好的或是壞的，但是他是有野心的成分
Here we don’t discuss whether the intention was good or not. The ambition is there anyway
擴張土地、擴張領土
e.g. ~ land, ~ territory
這也是有野心的成分在的
Ambition is there
擴張勢力
e,g, ~power
所以用擴張這個詞的時候呢，要特別的小心
so be attentive while using 擴張
你是用在什麼時候以及前後文，還有他的環境，你都要特別注意
Be aware of the context

有的

擴展
你可以選擇用擴展來說「向外的發展」
You can use 擴展 refering to the ‘outward’ development
像剛才我們是不是說「擴大」＝小到大。
「擴張」=向外的發展。「擴展」也是向外的發展。
As mentioned earlier 「擴大」indicates the development from small to big. 「擴張」&「擴展」indicate the outward development.
「擴展」你可以說：「擴展」市場，就是向外擴展市場，對吧？所以如果原本的市場是在台灣，你希望可以賣到外國，你就可以說：「擴展」市場
e.g.「擴展」market can be used to describe your current market is in Taiwan but you hope the market can grow outward to foreign countries too.
「擴展」市場，這個詞比較中性，沒有野心的成分在裡面
「擴展」market, this word is more neutral, without identidying the ambition
或是「擴展領土」、「擴展勢力」
or 擴展territory/power
「擴展」相對於「擴張」是比較中性的詞
「擴展」is more neutral than「擴張」

最後一個，「擴散」
Last word for today, 「擴散」
「擴散」跟剛才的三個詞就不一樣了。
「擴散」is very different from those 3 words mentioned earlier
「擴散」要另外來看
「擴散」should be discussed seperately from the rest of words
「擴散」你可以講的是一個物理現象
「擴散」indicates a kind of physical phenomenon
我這邊會放一張圖

想像一滴水到一個瓶子裡，然後他的顏色
imagine water drops into a bottle and the color
從一點慢慢擴散到整瓶水都變成那個顏色
spead throughout the bottle
這個就是「擴散」。

「擴散」常常會跟病菌來結合
「擴散」 is often used to describe the spread of virus
比如說1.擴散病毒

還有過去那兩年
and also for the past 2 years

擴散你也可以用在：擴散謠言、擴散廢氣
e.g. ~rumor, ~air pollution
其實接的似乎都並不是太好的詞
It seems that the words usually interact with 「擴散」are not so positive
但是「擴散」講的是一個物理現象，他是向外的
overall「擴散」refers to a kind of physical phenomenon with outward motion
好，那我們重新來整理一次
Let’s do a recap
如果你想要講，一個東西「從小到大」->你就用「擴大」
If you wanna describe the scale developed from small to big use「擴大」
那如果是向外，你可以用「擴張」或「擴展」
If you want to focus on the outward motion,
use「擴張」或「擴展」
「擴張」是帶有野心的，所以如果你在撰寫報章雜誌，那你是有特別的立場，你就可以用「擴張」
Since「擴張」carries extra meaning of ‘having ambition’, you can use this word if you think from certain standpoint

最後一個，「擴散」講的是一個物理現象。
Last,「擴散」refers to a kind of physical phemon
當然，謠言你也可以一起用：「擴散」謠言
